Kaitlin and Jess

Our Story

Two separate practices. One shared conviction.

We are Jess and Kaitlin — two mental health occupational therapists who run our own independent practices across Brisbane, but who found ourselves drawn together by something we couldn't stop talking about: how misunderstood mental health OT is, and how much that misunderstanding costs people who could genuinely benefit from it.

Between us, we've spent years watching clients arrive who had never heard of mental health OT, who had been struggling for months, or longer, not knowing that the kind of support they actually needed existed.

We've sat across from people who assumed OT was only for physical injuries, or who had been told their challenges weren't "clinical enough" for the services they were trying to access. We've also seen what happens when they finally get the right support.

Mental health OT is one of the most under-utilised and under-recognised forms of support available, and we want to change that.

This website is part of that mission. It exists to make mental health OT more visible, more accessible and less shrouded in the kind of professional jargon that makes people feel like support isn't for them. Because it is! It's for anyone whose mental health is getting in the way of living the life they want — regardless of diagnosis, funding or where they're starting from.

What we believe

Mental health affects all of us. You don't need a diagnosis or a reach a crisis point to deserve support.

Occupation is identity. What we do shapes who we are, and when mental health affects our ability to do the things that matter, it affects everything.

Practical support changes lives. Insight is valuable, but so is knowing how to get through a Tuesday. OT bridges that gap.

The profession deserves a louder voice. Mental health OT is evidence-based, effective, and under-recognised. We're committed to changing that.

Your First Session

You don't need to have it all figured out before we meet

50 minutes — in clinic or via telehealth

Reaching out for support takes courage, and the first session is often the part people feel most uncertain about. That's completely normal. There's no pressure to arrive with the right words or a clear sense of what you need. That's what we're here for, to figure out together.

Your first appointment is really just a conversation. It's a chance for me to get to know you; Not just the challenges you're facing, but who you are, what your life looks like and what you'd like it to look like. Unlike a structured intake process, your first session is genuinely conversational, no checklist, no forms to work through, just a real conversation at your pace.

First Session

What we cover

1.Your story

We'll start with what's brought you here — what's been hard, what's changed, or what you've been carrying for a while. You share as much or as little as you're comfortable with.

2.Your everyday life

I'll ask about the parts of daily life that feel most affected — routines, work or study, relationships, energy levels. This helps me understand where things are getting in the way.

3. What matters to you

We'll talk about your goals — what you'd like to be doing differently, what you'd like more of, and what feeling better actually looks like for you specifically.

4.Where to from here

By the end of the session, we'll have a shared sense of direction — and you'll leave knowing what working together might look like going forward.

First sessions can feel daunting — that's completely understandable. There's no pressure to have the right words or know exactly what you need. We'll find our way into it together, at a pace that works for you.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  • No — you can book directly with us at any time without a referral. However, if you'd like to access Medicare rebates, your GP will need to provide a Mental Health Care Plan first. We also accept referrals from GPs, specialists, support coordinators, and other allied health professionals.

  • A Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) is a document prepared by your GP that allows you to access Medicare rebates for mental health sessions — including with a mental health occupational therapist. It gives you up to 10 rebated sessions per calendar year. To get one, simply book a longer appointment with your GP and let them know you'd like to discuss your mental health. They'll assess your needs and prepare the plan if appropriate.

  • We don't routinely bulk bill, however Medicare rebates are available for clients with a Mental Health Care Plan, which significantly reduces the out-of-pocket cost of sessions. If you have concerns about fees or affordability, please reach out and we'll do our best to find a way forward together.

  • Both OTs and psychologists support mental health, but they approach it differently. Psychologists typically focus on understanding thoughts, emotions, and behaviour through therapeutic conversation. Mental health OTs focus on function — how your mental health affects the things you do every day, like your routines, work, relationships, and self-care. OT support is practical and grounded in real life, and works well alongside or independently of psychology. Many people see both.

  • Yes — we offer telehealth sessions for clients Australia-wide. Telehealth works just as well as in-person for most presentations, and many clients prefer the flexibility and comfort of connecting from home. All you need is a device with a camera and a private space. If you're unsure whether telehealth is right for you, feel free to ask when you get in touch.

  • Our fees are $193.99 per 50-minute session. Time and Rebates vary, pending referral pathway.
